Why choose a pitched roof?

These roofs are the most common type in Germany and are not just visually impressive. They set standards in terms of their resistance and flexibility. Pitched roofs come in a wide variety of forms, such as gabled, shed, hip or mansard roofs. The pitched roof can give the home owner protection lasting several generations, providing it is built correctly.

When is a roof a pitched roof?

By definition, pitched roofs are roofs with a pitch of 20 degrees or more. Roofs with a pitch of up to 10 degrees are classified as flat roofs. Anything in-between can be described as a shallow sloped roof.
Certain CREATON clay roof tile models can be used with a roof pitch of 7 degrees or more in combination with a watertight sub-roof.

The physics is simple: water drains off the sloping surface of pitched roofs in the direction of the exterior gutters because of gravity. The rainwater is then carried away by the gutter, which is normally metal.

The rule is, the steeper the roof, the faster water runs off. Steeply pitched roofs therefore provide significantly better protection from rain, snow and hail.
Roof with wind and storm

Protection from wind and storm

Roof with wind and storm
A pitched roof that is covered with clay roof tiles protects against moisture penetration during exposure to wind and bad weather. This protective function is achieved by the excellent interlock in clay roof tiles.

When combined with a high-quality sub-roof, no water reaches the interior of the building.

Thanks to specially designed wind suction protection such as special storm clips that fasten the tiles to the battens, pitched roofs perform well in storms.

Pitched roofs offer space directly under the roof. Useful and much-loved living space can be created in roof spaces.

A roof space can also be developed at a later date. Pitched roofs offer you flexibility in life and family planning. Roof spaces are frequently used as studies or children’s rooms and have a special charm due to the slopes in the interior.
Longevity of a roof

Durability with low maintenance expense

Longevity of a roof
As a rule, pitched roofs are more durable than flat roofs. Roof tiles have a life expectancy of more than 50 years. Furthermore, with CREATON you receive a 30-year guarantee on clay roof tiles and concrete roof tiles.

Damage to pitched roofs is frequently noticed more quickly and repairs are also usually easier and cheaper to make. In the long term, the acquisition and maintenance of pitched roofs is more cost-effective compared to flat roofs.

As a rule, pitched roofs are double-layered, which has insulation benefits and ensures a more pleasant interior climate. In winter, the well-insulated pitched roof keeps the cold out and ensures the interior remains cosy and warm.

In summer, on the other hand, the roof construction protects against overheating.

By contrast, flat roofs are usually a single-layer roof construction.

The double-layer, ventilated design (formerly known as a cold roof) in combination with good insulation provides protection from environmental noise pollution such as aircraft and traffic noise as well as noise from wind and rain. In contrast to the flat roof, rain does not hit the roof surface vertically.

This results in a calmer atmosphere, and a more relaxed sense of space.

Inclined roofs with certain coverings, such as clay roof tiles, are simply built to be open to diffusion and allow water vapour that arises from normal household activities to escape upwards.

In addition, clay roof tiles rapidly absorb water during rainfall then give it back to the environment. The rear-ventilated construction creates a pleasant interior climate and protects against mould formation and damage.

Installation of photovoltaic and solar systems

Solar system in-roof solution
The slope of pitched roofs favours the installation of photovoltaic and solar thermal energy systems for the recovery of renewable energy in owner-occupied buildings.

The optimal angle of incidence on sloping roofs ensures maximum energy recovery. These modern systems can also be retrofitted without costly work on the CREATON clay roof tiles.

Solar systems can be installed as both in-roof and on-roof solutions.
