THE SUB-ROOF – AN ADDITIONAL PROTECTIVE AND FUNCTIONAL LAYER WITHIN THE ROOF STRUCTURE

The times when loft spaces – i.e. the space below sloping roof beams – were used to store food or dry washing are generally over. Consequently, there are fewer and fewer old, exposed loft spaces in which you can still see the underside of the clay roof tiles.

Instead, nowadays lofts are greatly valued as an additional, usable living space and this living space is worth protecting – primarily against dissipating heat and penetrating precipitation.

These days, the entire roof structure serves a systematic purpose. As part of this system, factors including heat transition, vapour diffusion resistance as well as wind and precipitation integrity play pivotal roles.

The sub-roof also plays a vital part in this functional structure. In combination with various clay roof tile and concrete roof tile models, the sub-roof guarantees ideal roof structure protection from penetrating precipitation and condensation under the roof covering.  And thanks to its diffusion capability it also guarantees safe evaporation within the insulation layer.

The sub-roof therefore plays a crucial role as a protective and functional layer within the overall roof structure. However, nowadays, planners and installing roofers must also react to stricter requirements. They are responsible in terms of execution and durability. For this reason, CREATON is the right choice as the first port of call for roof systems.

CREATON roof membranes provide you with great protection without expensive sub-roof assemblies, even with low roof pitches. Our products have proven themselves in the field over decades and have been subjected to fluidics investigations. We have specified the CREATON pitch limit based on our many years of experience and the products available on the market. The superior technology found in CREATON roof and sub-roof products is a worthwhile investment in terms of costs, functionality and durability, both during construction and in long-term use. In compliance with national rules, our products are therefore considered state of the art and recognised as valid.

Since this relates to installations according to CREATON manufacturer’s data, which deviates from the German Roofing Trade (ZVDH) specifications, national rules and/or state-specific standards, we recommend that you consult with the end customer or owner of the property and obtain a specific agreement in writing between them and you as the installing roof technician. This will serve to safeguard the interests of both parties from a contractual point of view as a supplement to the service agreement.

1  Should be either an insulated roof structure with vapour barrier (project-dependent) or the membrane is laid directly on the planking and the interior space is very well ventilated

2 Individual droplets should not significantly impair the function of the membrane – droplets of oil usually have no effect.

3 DUO longlife ND extra and QUATTRO longlife extra usually remain stable if they come into contact with grease, lubricant or oil. However, some oil-based liquids may be made with additives, which can damage the film. Compatibility tests are therefore recommended.

4 We recommend backing the membrane with a needle-spun-bonded fabric (geotextile).

5 A base layer according to ZVDH is an additional measure under roof coverings with direct fastenings. The base layer loses its rainproofing function when the roof covering is installed. This is not an installation guideline. The minimum pitch for the roof membrane and increased requirements for a specific project must be observed during application. Footnote 3 (Yes) can also apply here in terms of oil resistance.
